Race Results
Southern California/Nevada Cyclocross District Championships Dec 1st, 20077
Club board member Paul Avila made the trek up to Bakersfield, CA and competed in the Master's 40-44 championship race. The low attendance at the race was disappointing but Paul managed to ride to 4th place ahead of two others that suffered flat tires. The following day Paul returned to Hart Park in Bakersfield for the regularly scheduled race and finished 5th in the Master's 35+ 3/4 race and 3rd in the Open Singlespeed challenge.
Fiesta Island TT Oct 7th, 20077
Club member Marc Zatarian competed in the Fiesta Island Time Trial in San Deigo. He rode to a 17th place finish in the 50-59 Masters category. As a newcomer to the age group we should see many good results from Marc in the future.
Furnace Creek 508 - Oct 2007
Club president Kevin Walsh competed in the 508 this past October. What is the 508? It's a 508 mile non-stop race from Valencia to 29 Palms - the LONG way! 508 miles and 35,000 feet of elevation gain! Kevin completed the course in 36 hrs, 36 minutes, 40 seconds. Way to go Kevin! Only 56.4% of the solo starters finished the race. This shows the dedication and hardcore mental toughness that is required to complete such a demanding event.
SoCal Cyclocross Prestige Series 2007
Paul Avila is currently in 17th place overall in the highly competitive 35+ Masters 3/4 category in the Prestige Series. How addicting is cyclocross? Friend of the club Justin Koo raced at the last race of the 2006 season. Even though he flatted in the race he still had a blast. He has been to a few races this year and he recently bought a cyclocross bike AND brought 2 friends to race at the most recent race in Sylmar! If you have the slightest interest in trying cross please let me know! You'll improve or maintain your fitness, tremendously improve bike handling, and have a good time! The season runs into 2008 so get your mountain bike out and let's go! PS - watch for cyclocross to come to the AV in the 2008/09 season.
Encino Velodrome - Masters Championships - July 2007
Pat Hogan went down to the track to compete in the individual time trial events. Giving it all he had Pat came away with the 2km TT championship! What a track stud! Now it's time to go for the boards of the ADT Event Center!
RAAM 2007 - Race Across America
In June of 2007 Kevin Walsh completed the cross country event with Team N.U.B.S. and finished in a very respectable 8th place in the Four Person Male category. Making their herculian effort even more incredible was their lack of support. The 4-man team were their own crew! Taking turns driving, napping, and eating, the squad made it from Oceanside, CA. to Atlantic City, NJ. in 7 days 2 hours 27 minutes. To put the level of competition in perspective, the difference between the 6th through 9th place teams at the finish was less than 2 hours! Amazingly close after over 7 days of nonstop racing.
Furnace Creek 508 - October 2006
Congratulations to club members Dave Stroup, Jason Short, and Tim Granger for placing 2nd in the Furnace Creek 508 Bicycle Race on October 7-9, 2006. This non-stop 508-mile bicycle race is revered the world over for its epic mountain climbs, stark desert scenery, desolate roads, and its reputation as one of the toughest but most gratifying endurance challenges available, bar none. The course has a total elevation gain of over 35,000', crosses ten mountain passes, and stretches from Santa Clarita (just north of Los Angeles), across the Mojave Desert, through Death Valley, to Twenty Nine Palms. Solo, two-person relay, and four-person relay divisions are offered with 181 racers competing, the largest field in the history of the race. Designed as an endurance challenge, no drafting or pack riding is allowed in any division. There is a 48 hour time limit for the solo division and a 46 hour time limit for the relay team division. Their time was 28:59:23.
